Self-propelled lawn mowers vs push models – compare the features

A self-propelled mower does most of the hard work, but a push mower has benefits if you have a small or awkward lawn space and you feel the need for full control.

Self-propelled lawn mowers vs push models – compare the features

Most people, given the chance, would choose a battery powered lawn mower that does most of the work for them - especially if they have a larger lawn.
But for smaller lawns, or grassy areas with odd angles, the swift efficiency of a self-propelled lawn mower is too much. This is where battery powered push mowers come in - they take up some of the heft, while not letting the speed get out of control. In a tighter space, this is a game changer.

Compare lawn mower features

EGO has a wide range of self-propelled mowers, but we’ve also applied our technology to a push lawn mower.

How does a self-propelled mower work?

Once you’ve fully extended and locked the handle as per your mower’s instruction leaflet:

  1. Press and hold in the green safety key

  2. Hold the bail switch (the lever or safety bar) in

  3. Release the safety key

As long as you hold the bail switch towards you, your self-propelled mower will move at the speed you select. You simply walk behind it, guiding it around your lawn.

Some EGO self-propelled mowers have a polymer deck, which makes the mower lighter and even easier to manouevre. There’s also a steel deck model for those who prefer a heavier mower – the powerful self-propelled motor and battery will handle it.

Is a push mower too basic?

The EGO Power+ LM1701E 42cm push mower is far from basic! It doesn’t move the mower for you, but otherwise it’s packed with features to make your task easier and keep your lawn looking fabulous.

In fact, its features helped it rank on the Gardeners’ World Best Cordless Mowers of 2022 list.

  • Perfect for small and medium sized level gardens

  • Can cut up to 400sqm in a single charge of the 2.5Ah battery supplied in the kit

  • Control you need to work in tighter, awkward spaces

  • 42cm cutting capacity and 20cm-80mm cutting heights

  • Large 55L rear collection bag

  • ABP1700 mulching kit available to purchase separately

  • AR1700 rear roller kit (for stripes) available to purchase separately

  • Fantastic domestic warranties - 5 years for all mowers, 3 years for batteries and chargers

  • Equally great commercial warranties - up to 3 years for mowers, batteries and chargers

Importantly, for a push mower, it’s fairly agile - its weight is only 22kg (versus 25kg for the equivalent sized LM1702E-SP 42cm self-propelled mower).

Other benefits of EGO cordless lawn mowers

Our battery-operated lawn mowers have fewer moving parts, which means less vibration - important if you have a large garden or do frequent mowing. Thanks to the smooth brushless motor, they’re less noisy, too.

All EGO lawn mowers have adjustable handle heights and easy to reach grass box emptying positions. And to top it, they don’t give off any emissions and are cheaper to run than their petrol equivalents.
